PRIX VISIONICA - Jury Statement

The Statement of the Jury of the Prix Visionica International Festival for Creative Television


The international Prix Visionica competition aims to build bridge between the realm of arts and culture and the rapidly developing media world. It is a forum for presenting cultural phenomena in television creativity and the challenges that contemporary culture poses for creative television artists in the media era.

The number and the quality of entries submitted to the competition from 28 countries worldwide proof the relevance of the issues raised by the Prix Visionica Festival in its first edition.

The Prix Visionica Competition Jury consisting of Sławomir Grünberg, Agnieszka Holland, Jerzy Kapuściński, Henk van der Meulen and Alexander Vlasov founf the general quality of the programmes submitted to the competition very high. It was therefore not easy to establish the winners.

After deliberations taking place on April 26th and 27th, the Jury decided to grant the following awards according to the rules nad regulations of the competition.


Prix Visionica Grand Prize

Amounting to 25 000 Euro

Made in Poland

In times when the genre of television theatre is  like an endangered species, the progressive young directors of Made in Poland succeeded to combine in a highly convincing and well balanced way contemporary social issues with  creative forms of the audiovisual language. Both the content and the artistic expression of this television theatre play resulted in a brilliant confrontation of the language of the theatre with the language of the television.

Parę osób, mały czas

(Couple of People, Little Time) 

Directed by Andrzej Barański

This film is about Miron Białoszewski, one of the leading figures of the 20th century Polish literature and his unusual frendship with Jadwiga Stańczakowa. It shows inspiration, devotion, human vulnerability, the power of tolerance and creativity in a sympathetic, intimate and convincing way.

The Planet

Authors: Michael Stenberg, Johan Söderberg, Linus Torell

The subject of overall global climate changes could hardly be addressed enough within the genre of documentary film. The makers of this film have done so combining well researched information and attractive visualisations.

Award amounting to 5000 Euros

For putting the classical story of Hamlet into the dramatic surroundings of the legendary Gdansk Shipyard, making it available for both the theatre public present during the performance there and now as well as for the wider television audience. Shakespaere's original has been carefully translated into present day Polish and similarly staged in a contemporary way. The television production makes use if the possibilities of expression offered by the audiovisual broadcast medium making a centuries old classic a convincing experience in the Here and Now.

Car-Men

The timeless epic of Bizet's Carmen is changed into a hommage to the art of film. Silent movies, films by Ingmar Bergman serve as references to the story of this famous love triangle, this time not executed by young beautiful dancers and singers, but by the seasoned performers of the Netherlands Dance Theatre III which, in their middle age bring special character and vulnerability to the drama.

The Mozart Minute

(Submitted by sixpackfilm)

For encouraging 26 filmmakers and video artists to share their original views on the phenomenon of Mozart in a way that goes far beyond of the usual manner of celebrating a musical genius in the forms of opera performances, concerts and galas. These experimental short films are often as mysterious as the sources of Mozart's own talent.

Lekcja białoruskiego

(Belarussian Class) 

Directed by Mirosław Dembiński

For an intimate insight into the story of young people's struggle for their national identity and freedom. The work clearly shows the limitations under which it had to be made, but at the same time overcomes them. The result is a moving documentary, both of a specific as well as a universal nature.

A Girl from a Children’s Village

Directed by Liubin Hu

In a country known for its massive developments and big numbers he has made an orphaned girl in need for special care the unlikely heroine of a film. This moving document draws Liubin Hu closer and closer to his subject until she disapeares from sight. His subsequence search for her becomes a search for the other and ultimately one's self.

The films presents some of the history of mostly European cinema suitable to be shown on prime time television. These documentaries show an effective and convincing way of combining archive footage and informative interviews, addressing not only the history of cinema itself but also phenomena, such as male and female stereotypes, as well as sexual orientation.

Sunless City

Directed by Sergey Potemkin

Against the backdrop of contemporary St. Petersburg a love story unfolds. The individual and social issues of the characters are beautifully intertwined with timeless, almost fairy tale like elements, to tell a gripping story of love and death.
