Neuro-engineering is developing at an explosive pace, thanks to the active involvement of researchers around the world. People with disabilities are assisted by arms that move in response to thought alone and by mechanical eyes. Medical treatments that entail the mechanical stimulation of the brain have led to dramatic improvements in certain chronic illnesses and psychological disorders. And it is the military that is setting the pace for the rapid progress in this field: the US army is investing vast amounts of money to accelerate neuro-engineering research and development. The program examines the future of humankind, visiting scientists and ethicists around the world.
