ARTE - the European culture channel
The public-service television channel ARTE acts as a showcase for the rich cultural diversity of Europe. Its purpose is « to conceive and produce television programmes which, in a broad sense, are cultural and international in character and conducive to promoting understanding and rapprochement among Europe’s nations ». ARTE’s policy is to broadcast high-quality national and international co-productions in cinema, drama and documentaries as well as news, live and performing arts. Based on an Agreement between France and Germany, ARTE is composed of three entities, the headquarters in Strasburg and two members, ARTE France in Paris and ARTE Deutschland TV GmbH in Baden-Baden.
The channel is financed through the television licence fee in both countries. ARTE is broadcast simultaneously in French and German all around Europe. Moreover, it has entered into Agreements with other public service broadcasters like, for instance, SRG SSR Idée Suisse in Switzerland, RTBF in Belgium, TVE in Spain, TVP in Poland, ORF in Austria, YLE in Finland, BBC in the United-Kingdom and SVT in Sweden.
RUSSIAN TELEKANAL KULTURA
Launched in 1997 a theme-centered Television Channel KULTURA is the only non-commercial, ad-free national TV channel in Russia.
The Channel is on the air for 17 hours daily. Currently its audience is over 90 milion people.
Its digital signal is received today in the territory of 83 Russian Federation regions, as well as in all CIS countries. Through RTR Planet, a Russian-language 24-hour satellite channel the Channel is broadcast also to Western Europe, the USA and Australia.
The programming policy of Kultura TV Channel is based on full and comprehensive coverage of the modern socio-cultural events of Russia, Europe and the world. Kultura TV Channel broadcasts about 7 thousand premieres a year reflecting various aspects of cultural life of the society – literature, theatre, cinema, music, creative activity, science and education. Kultura TV Channel produces documentary and educational series, feature films, theatre performances and television adaptations of classic works. Music programs are among the high priorities of the Channel, especially live transmissions of the major music events.
Kultura TV Channel has a wide range of international contacts with numerous major TV stations worldwide. Their partners are among others BBC, ARTE, RAI, ZDF, TV France International, Euroarts and Discovery. Due to this cooperation the Channel develops international program and video material exchange and runs joint live transmissions. As a member of the EBU, Kultura has participated in numerous important events of the European cultural life. The Channel is a part of the national media holding The Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK)
